IMPLEMENTING NEW TECHNOLOGY AT CMH

Providing top-quality, personal care, close to home is one of the big goals in the Diagnostic Imaging Department at CMH. Implementing new technology is helping in that effort. This department now offers digital mammography, a 64-slice CT scanner, state-of-the-art nuclear medicine camera, diagnostic ultrasound, MRI and X-ray, along with bone densitometry services. Each of these procedures are designed to create the images needed for physicians to develop the most accurate diagnosis for patients.

Advancements in diagnostic imaging enable physicians to better detect heart disease, cancers and other conditions much sooner, leading to earlier treatment and a better success rate. One such advancement is now making all of the imaging services at CMH much more efficient.

"We are now utilizing the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) which offers computer-based access to radiological images and reports," according to Kristy Smolinski, Director of Diagnostic Imaging Services at CMH. "With this system, physicians involved in a patient's care can have access to view both current and previous comparison studies over the internet using personal computers at multiple sites simultaneously, greatly speeding diagnosis. Not only is it extremely efficient, it is more cost effective."

PACS makes it possible for physicians to access a patient's images from any hospital, since the information is stored electronically. This availability saves precious time in an emergency, whether close to home or across the country. This system is designed to allow physicians and patients to review images in the doctor's office with digital technology making it possible to "zoom in" on particular areas in order to enhance and/or enlarge details.
