Cheboygan Memorial is Tobacco-Free
Cheboygan Memorial Hospital (CMH) has announced that it is now a Tobacco-Free Campus. As of January 1, 2008, use of tobacco products is prohibited on all CMH property including the Indian River Medical Center, Lincoln Bridge Plaza and CMH Warehouse. This policy applies to all Hospital staff, patients, visitors, volunteers and vendors.
This new directive came out of the Workforce Excellence module in the Hospital’s Strategic Planning sessions that began almost two years ago. Employee work groups were formed to offer recommendations to help improve the workplace.
“Because we’re dedicated to the health and well-being of the community we serve, Cheboygan Memorial Hospital has turned its campus into a tobacco-free campus”, said Michael Konicki, Chair of the CMH Board of Trustees. “This decision will help provide a healthy and safe environment for our patients and visitors, and our entire staff, as well.”
This initiative also falls in line with the request from the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA) that all Michigan hospitals voluntarily become smoke-free by January 1, 2008.
However, CMH has decided to go a step further and become tobacco-free effective January 1st. This means no cigarettes, pipes, cigars, smokeless tobacco or snuff.
“We are the health care leader in this community. CMH is ready to lead by example while at the same time offering our resources to patients, visitors and staff who smoke. We want to be supportive to those who want to quit”, stated Barbara Cliff, CMH President and CEO.
