Ethics Policy
Policy:The Governing Board of Cheboygan Memorial Hospital has established this statement on organizational ethics in recognition of the organization's responsibility to our patients, staff, physicians and the community we serve. It is the responsibility of every member of the CMH community - board members, administration, medical staff, employees - to act in a manner that is consistent with this organizational statement and its supporting policies. Our behavior will be guided by the following general principles:
- All patients, employees, physicians and visitors deserve to be treated with dignity, respect and courtesy.
- We will fairly and accurately represent ourselves, our services and our capabilities.
- We will provide services to meet the indentified needs of our patients and will constantly seek to avoid the provision of those services which are unnecessary and nonefficacious.
- We will adhere to established standards of care throughout the organization.
- We will honor a patient's choice of post-hospital care agencies if he/she has a preference.
Corporate Compliance: CMH will provide services in compliance with all state and federal laws governing its operations, and consistent with the highest standards of business and professional ethics. This is a solemn commitment to our patients, to our community, to those government agencies that regulate CMH, and to each employee. To ensure the Hospital's compliance policies are consistently applied, CMH has an established legal and regulatory Compliance Program. To promote an environment of ethical and professional conduct for the provision of services to CMH customers, all employees, as well as those professionals who enjoy professional staff membership, will be governed by Standards of Conduct, as well as all CMH policies. All employees are required to ensure that the performance of their assigned duties and their behavior and actions are consistent with the CMH Standards of Conduct and are in accordance with all laws and regulations applicable to the business of the Hospital.
Respect for the Patient: We will treat all patients with dignity, respect and courtesy. These patients and/or their surrogate decision maker will be involved in care decisions to the extent that such is practical and appropriate. We will also seek to inform all patients about therapeutic alternatives and the risks associated with any care they are seeking. We will constantly seek to understand and respect their objectives for care. Patients and/or their surrogate decision maker will be involved in resolving dilemmas about care decisions. In all circumstances, we will attempt to treat patients in a manner giving reasonable thought to their cultural, psychosocial and spiritual values and beliefs. All patients are entitled to privacy in treatment, consideration and dignity. Each admitted patient will receive a copy of the Patient Bill of Rights.
