"Personal Care, Close to Home"
Many hands make light work, as the old saying goes. But, at CMH, the work that our volunteers perform not only makes the workload lighter, in many cases, they make the work possible. This includes greeting visitors, assisting patients, stuffing envelopes, filing reports, and running the Gift Shop.
The volunteer program at CMH currently has more than 100 active volunteers. In 2010, volunteers logged over 23,000 hours at the Hospital. Here's a look at the different Volunteer Opportunities available at CMH:
Information Desk - The CMH Information Desk is located at the main entrance to the Hospital (near the Chapel). It is staffed by volunteers, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Orientation includes a review of policies and procedures, as well as one-on-one training. Volunteers for this position need to be friendly and helpful to our visitors. Shifts usually run from 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., and 12:30 p.m. - 3 p.m. This position mainly involves sitting at the desk for most of the shift.
Health Center Greeters - This desk is located at the revolving door entrance to the Health Center. It is a very busy location staffed by our volunteers from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. These positions involve not only giving directions, but may also include transporting laboratory specimens, helping transfer patients, assisting people in and out of their vehicles. Shifts usually run from 8 a.m. - 12 noon, and 12 noon - 4 p.m. This position requires quite a bit of walking.
Larson Hall - Many volunteers are needed for the variety of activities offered in the Hospital's long term care unit. Some of the activities that volunteers help with include: game time, tea time, exercise class, coffee hour, galmour time, story hour, movies, manicures, bible study, story reminisce, cooking class, craft class, garden club, bingo, relaxation group and conversation therapy.
Gift Shop - The Canopy Gift Shoppe is located in the Health Center and is actually run by the CMH Auxiliary. It is open seven days a week. You need to be a member of the Auxiliary to volunteer at the Canopy Shoppe. New staff members are given an orientation that includes how to operate the cash register and document sales.
